Do I need a boat licence to charter a yacht in Australia?Usually no, but the operator still has to judge whether you can handle the boat and can refuse to hand it over.Should I choose a bareboat or a skippered charter?Bareboat if you can sail and want privacy; skippered if you cannot, or if you want the holiday to be effortless.How far ahead should I book an Australian sailing charter?Six to twelve months for school holidays and peak season, four to eight weeks for quiet midweek dates.Where is the best place for a first sailing charter in Australia?The Whitsundays for a first bareboat week; Sydney Harbour or Pittwater for a first day or weekend.How many days should a sailing charter be?Five to seven nights is the sweet spot; three nights is the practical minimum for a bareboat week away.
Money and contracts
Are Australian charter prices all-inclusive?Rarely. The headline figure is usually the boat only, with fuel, food, bond, waiver and levies added.What is a charter bond and when do I get it back?A security amount held against your card for damage or loss, usually released within a week or two of a clean return.What does a damage waiver actually cover?It lowers your excess for a daily fee, rarely to zero, and commonly excludes tender, outboard, sails and groundings.Can I cancel a charter and get my money back?Depends on the contract and how close to the date you cancel; deposits are often non-refundable, but consumer law still applies.Who pays if the weather cancels the trip?Usually you carry the risk, with a credit or partial refund at the operator decision; get the clause in writing before you pay.

How many people can actually sleep aboard?Far fewer than the advertised capacity; ask for the berth count, not the day passenger limit.What should I pack for an Australian sailing charter?Half what you think, in a soft bag, with sun protection, a warm layer and any medication you might need.Is there wifi, phone signal and power aboard?Some power, patchy phone signal, and wifi only if the operator provides it; plan to be partly offline.Can we bring our own food and alcohol?On bareboat, almost always yes. On crewed and day charters it varies, and glass is often restricted.Who cooks, and what is the food like?You cook on a bareboat; a cook or chef aboard changes the trip, and the standard varies a lot by operator.
Weather and safety
When is cyclone season and should I avoid it?The official Australian cyclone season runs 1 November to 30 April; for tropical charters the dry season is the better bet.Will I get seasick, and what helps?Possibly, especially on the first day; a catamaran, sheltered water and preparation before departure all help.What happens in an emergency at sea?You call the base or authorities on VHF, use the gear the vessel is certified to carry, and the operator coordinates from there.
Who can come
Can children come on a sailing charter?Yes on most charters, with minimum ages set by some operators and lifejackets sized for kids arranged in advance.Are sailing charters accessible for guests with limited mobility?Some are, but very few boats are purpose-built for it; ask specific questions about boarding, steps and the heads.
