SailsPort Douglas and Low IslesMay–October for the tropical coast

Port Douglas and Cairns are the two northern reef gateways, and the charter offer from each is mostly day sailing to the outer reef or the inshore islands rather than multi-day cruising.

The difference that matters is which reef you reach. From Port Douglas the Low Isles are close enough for a half day; from Cairns the Green Island and Michaelmas Cay runs are the standard. Both are inside the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, so the operator's permit and the zoning of the site decide where you may actually anchor and snorkel, not the brochure.

Both towns are in the tropical north, which means the wet season and cyclone season shape availability far more than demand does. May to October is the reliable window.

Ask before you book flights
  • Which wharf exactly, and what time is the handover or boarding?
  • Which airport does the operator expect you at, and is the transfer included?
  • Where do you leave a car for the duration, and at what cost?
  • Is there a berth charge, landing fee or marina levy on top of the daily rate?
  • If the boat cannot leave this base on the day, what is offered instead?

How this base page was builtClustered from the base each operator publishes on its own site, read together with the state it operates in, because two marinas in different states share a name. 3 of these 4 operators publish a rate; the rest quote. No facility here has been inspected and no operator was contacted for comment.Methodology
