An hour north of the Sydney CBD, Pittwater is where the city's bareboat fleet actually lives. Newport is the usual base, and the ground runs from Pittwater itself through Broken Bay into Cowan Creek and up the Hawkesbury.

Two things make it unusually good for short charters. The anchorages are close together, so a weekend is not spent transiting, and almost all of it is sheltered, so a forecast that would cancel a coastal trip just changes which arm of the estuary you sail up.

It is also the easiest place in the country to charter without much experience, which is why several operators will hand over a boat here to crews they would not hand one to in the Whitsundays.
